Fasting has been practiced for thousands of years for health and religious reasons. Fasting has been observed in nature and it has been proven to extend the life of animals. The physiological effect of fasting extends far beyond weight loss and includes lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol and decreasing the systolic blood pressure. It gives the body a chance to cleanse so that it may rebuild. The very young, the very old, and the infirm are not recommended to fast. Some conditions do not respond well to fasting. If one has been diagnosed with an illness, fasting should only be undertaken under supervision.
Fasting may release more than just toxins; sometimes old eating patterns may reappear, looking for a new hold on you. You may need help in releasing the emotions that may arise. Preparing for a fast, the length of a fast, and how to close a fast, are equally important. Be cautious about over-doing fasting; too depleted of a body cannot rejuvenate. What took years to create can be reversed but it will not happen with one fast. A healthy lifestyle will most likely include a regular fasting program.
