Understanding the Condition

According to Ayurveda, a sour or acidic taste in the mouth—especially after meals—often indicates an imbalance in Pitta dosha, particularly in the small intestine. This may be accompanied by other classic signs of high Pitta, including:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or indigestion

  • Acid reflux or a burning sensation in the chest or throat

  • Headaches, skin irritation, itching, and rashes

  • Pimples or heat-related inflammation

From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is a Pitta-type digestive disorder. However, similar symptoms can also arise due to imbalances in Vata or Kapha doshas:

  • Vata-related acidity is often linked to irregular digestion, gas, chest discomfort, weakness, and lightheadedness.

  • Kapha-related acidity tends to present with sluggish digestion, excess mucus or phlegm, heaviness, fatigue, poor appetite, and excessive sleep.

Other contributing factors may include improper diet, excessive physical activity, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, bacterial imbalances (such as H. pylori), weak digestive valve function, or side effects of certain medications. Understanding the root cause is essential to selecting the appropriate support protocol.

The Ayurvedic Protocol

In traditional Ayurvedic practice, supporting this condition typically involves:

  • Pitta-pacifying diet along with specific guidance on food combining

  • An after-meal herbal formula to reduce excess stomach acidity, such as ACID FORMULA

  • cooling, anti-inflammatory digestive tea taken between meals, such as Acid Belly Tea

  • Additional support using herbal formulas for liver healthintestinal balance, or immune support, depending on the individual's needs

Many individuals experience rapid improvement by following the proper diet and using targeted herbal formulas. According to traditional texts, cooling and demulcent digestive formulas can help calm internal heat, soothe inflammation, and restore digestive harmony.
